The inaugural show of the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Americas (MoCA-Americas),Subverting Materials: Textile and Fiber Art by Women Artists, continues to serve as a platform for supporting women in the arts, and especially, the use of textile materials by women artists in their work. On the afternoon of December 15th, the show’s curator Francine Birbragher, with the support of MoCA-America’s team, invited guests–many of them collectors–for a tour of the show, and the museum.
Subverting Materials: Textile and Fiber Art by Women Artists gives continuity to the museum’s long lasting mission of promoting and exhibiting the work of women artists, and complements the museum’s annual program, “Women in the Arts.” In association with the city-wide event “Threading the City” and the Fiber Artist Miami Association (FAMA), this exhibition shed light on how artists combine and use textile, fiber and thread as an innovative medium for the creation of fine art.
During this guided Curator’s Tour, Francine explained the significance behind the pieces of all 9women artists. Several of the artists including, Aimée Perez, Ivonne Ferrer, Evelyn Politzer and Milena Martínez Pedrosa, attended the talk and spoke about the process that went into making the pieces, the materials, assemblage, and thought-process among other things. Milena Martínez Pedrosa explained the poetic and symbolic nature of her installation, which invites us to reflect on the relationship between humanity and spirituality. Ivonne Ferrer, talked about her use of sacred geometry, the combination of different media and techniques, and the woman’s connection to motherhood and their children. Likewise, Evelyn Politzer combines yarn, wool, and fabric strands, natural materials that, according to her, "have stories to tell.” And Aimee Perez’s work continues the thread of reclaiming the histories and legends of famous, powerful women and retelling them through her own perspective.
The tour concluded within the gallery space of The Rodríguez Collection, displaying a selection of notable Cuban and Latin American artists, carefully curated by the museum’s chief curator,R10. Museum director Odette Lopez gave a short presentation about the history of the collection, and highlighted some of the renowned artists on display such Jose Bedia, Pedro de Oráa, Wifredo Lam, Amelia Pelaez, Aldo Menéndez and Ruben Rodríguez, among others. MoCA-Americas supports the visual, literary and performing arts, and makes it its mission to combine them in programs dedicated to supporting and promoting, not just women artists, but curators, writers, collectors and more. With this event the museum continues to emphasize the importance of collaboration and fruitful relationships within the art world.
